Mood Board: Great Room
Casual yet refined in your Taste? Here is inspiration for a Great Room to create these qualities.
Below are 3 Mood Boards based on budget and style for a Great Room.
I like to create a Great Room for a client that works for their design needs. In this client scenario, they wanted a casual yet classic Great Room. The client entertains frequently and their dinner parties always start & end in the Great Room. They require enough seating in the room to casually seat up to 6 comfortably.
In my design process, I always start with the larger upholstery piece(s) in the room and build my selections around it. The sourcing of selections will depend on the clients allocated funds for the room. Once I determine the larger pieces - the seating, in this design, sectional & chair. Leather is easy to keep clean and adds the casual feeling to this Great Room. I decided on a Carmel coloured leather for the sectional in this Great Room to add warmth. The shape and modern style of the Club Chairs provide interest and an air of comfort. I begin to layer the Great Room with the addition of the area rug. Changing the area rug in a room can allow one to stay within their budget & creates ambiance in the room. A classic black and white woven wool area rug provides contrast and is functional, easy to maintain with regular vacuuming (no beater bars), and their fibers are naturally moisture & stain resistant. Changing to a less expensive polypropylene shag area rug will also create a similar casual look, but with a little more visual & tactile texture. If you prefer colour in your home add an area rug with an abstract pattern in varying tones of colour blocks.
I then move onto the selection of the accent pieces - coffee & end tables. The multi-level and interconnected coffee table pieces allow one to move them around the room, accommodating appetizers, desserts, and cocktails with ease. Nesting tables also perform this functionality in a Great Room. Metal finishes are easy to clean; the finish of the metal can determine the style they add to the room. The combination of metal finishes keeps it casual, yet classic as they can blend with other metals in the home.
The ambiance of a Great Room is altered by the light fixtures in selection of their style & function. Task, general & direct lighting are used to luminate a room for functional purposes. The shape of a table or floor lamp aids in the sense of style portrayed. For these design scenarios, I have added classic black in the shade or base of the lamp to unify the space.
The style for each room is still conveyed through varying the pieces of furniture, accents, and accessories selected. These pieces are all different price points but convey a very similar style.
I am sure one or a combination of them will suit ones budget if you prefer this style.
